Out and about: New York 1972

Navigating subways is rarely easy. But imagine creating a map that can be understood by millions of people each day from all walks of life. This New York City subway map by renowned Italian designer Massimo Vignelli was created in 1972. It shows train lines running at 45 and 90 angles and, similarly to the London Underground map, lines as colours and stops as dots.

Now a design classic, the map was replaced in 1979 with a design by Michael Hertz which, despite some modifications, remains in use today.
